ASA Radar Course

The ASA Radar Course teaches safe and efficient use of small-craft radar for piloting, chart navigation and collision avoidance.  This includes radar principles as well as practical matters of radar operation.

The course uses a realistic PC based radar simulator to illustrate radar measurements.

This course is ideal for boat owners plus skippers and crew who may use a small-craft radar.  You will gain knowledge far beyond what you can get from the Owners Manual.

Subjects covered:

  • How radar works – principles, terminology, installation, radiation safety
  • Radar operation – controls you can adjust, optimizing the radar picture, display modes pros and cons, dealing with interference
  • Interpreting the screen – what can you expect to see (and not see), identifying targets and land masses
  • Piloting using radar – hold a desired course, identify distant harbors or channels, keep a safe distance off, position for anchoring
  • Getting a fix using radar – to verify a GPS position or to navigate by radar alone
  • Collision avoidance – tracking targets, closest point of approach, relative vs. true motion, predicting target running lights, ARPA and AIS
  • Radar and the Navigation Rules – if your vessel has a radar, then the law says when & how you must use it to keep a lookout, evaluate risk of collision, determine safe speed, and maneuver in traffic.  Know how the big ships operate and avoid collisions by using the same rules they do!

The ASA Radar Course includes the textbook "Radar for Mariners" by David Burch, a workbook and a PC-based radar simulator with a 30-day limited use software license.

At the end of your course, you will challenge the ASA Radar Endorsement standard. This exam will take place during the last two hours of your course. After passing the exam you will receive the official ASA Radar Endorsement seal.

ASA Radar is taught by Jonathan Taylor, a USCG-licensed 100 Ton Master and FAA-licensed pilot.  This is Jon's ninth year instructing with the School and the course draws on his experiences sailing in many waters over many years.
