Basic Dinghy Sailing

Registration Form

After completing Basic Sailing, Manhattan Sailing School invites you to accelerate your learning curve by enrolling in Basic Dinghy Sailing.

We teach Basic Dinghy Sailing on Sunfish The Sunfish is the most popular boat ever produced.  Millions of people have learned to sail on Sunfish and you can frequently find Sunfish for rent at hotels and resorts.  There is also an active racing program around the world.

Learning to sail a dinghy is pure pleasure.  It will increase your confidence and improve your skills quickly.  You will learn to recognize the direction of the wind, understand puffs, wind shifts and boat heel.

Dinghy sailing is primarily for athletic people.  You have to move around the boat and you have to be able to right a boat after a capsize.

The subjects you will learn in Basic Dinghy Sailing are:

  • Dinghy Gear and Equipment
  • Points of Sail
  • Rigging & Derigging
  • Tacking
  • Jibing
  • Man Overboard
  • Dapsize and Recovery
  • Sailing by the Lee
  • Important Knots
  • Basic Navigation Rules

Each course is limited to 6 students.  On the first day, you will double up and sail 2 people per boat.  On the second day, you will single-hand your own Sunfish.

After graduating from Basic Dinghy Sailing, you will be able to rent a Sunfish from our school on an hourly basis and continue practicing and improving your sailing skills.

At the end of your course, you can also challenge the American Sailing Association Basic Dinghy Standard if you wish to get certified.

Location

We teach Basic Dinghy Sailing in the flats area southwest of the Statue of Liberty.  This shallow area of the harbor is protected from the main shipping channel by an old reef. There is no commercial traffic in this location.  Also, the water depth averages 6 feet so there is less current than in the main harbor.

The tuition for Basic Dinghy Sailing is $490 per person.  There are also group discounts for 2 or more people.
