Coastal Navigation Registration Form

Photo: A chart of the Upper Bay of New York Harbor.  Navigating properly requires learning many fundamentals and will increase your boating safety.

Every sailor should know and understand the fundamentals of Coastal Navigation.

This course will help you keep track of your vessel’s position and predict where you will be in the future.

Coastal Navigation will teach you:

  • Navigation Tools & Techniques
  • Charting
  • Dead Reckoning
  • Fixes
  • Tides and Currents
  • Current Sailing
  • Tide and Current Tables
  • Variation & Deviation
  • Danger Bearing
  • Using a Pelorus
  • Aids to Navigation
  • Loran-C & GPS

Coastal Navigation is taught in a classroom setting. Classes are one evening per week for 5 weeks.

Each course is limited to 12 students.

At the end of your course, you will challenge the American Sailing Association standard for Coastal Navigation. This exam will take place during the last two hours of your course. After passing the exam you will receive the official ASA Coastal Navigation seal. Coastal Navigation and Bareboat Chartering are pre-requisities for the ASA Advanced Coastal Cruising course, which may be taught by the School in the future.

Tuition is $390 per person.

  • One evening per week for 5 weeks
  • 6:30 - 9:30 p.m.
