J/24 Sailboats

We teach Basic Sailing on J/24 sailboats.

J/24s are the most popular one-design keelboat in the country.  They were introduced in 1976 and revolutionized the world of sailing.

J/24s are also an ideal teaching boat. They’re fast and responsive. When you push the tiller or adjust the sails, you’ll feel the results immediately.

J/24s are the sailing equivalent of a sports car.

J/24s measure 24 feet in length and have a 8’9" beam. Below the boat is a 950 lb lead keel which draws 4 feet and provides stability.

All school boats are outfitted with bow and stern pulpits, double lifelines and an outboard engine.

Our school J/24s belong to the Manhattan Sailing Club.  These boats are all maintained in top condition by a professional staff.

The club owns more than 30 J/24s.  The original fleet of 13 boats have white hulls and are designated by number.

The rest of the boats have red hulls and are named after famous clipper ships which used to sail in the harbor in the 1800s.  The school normally uses red boats.

We encourage you to come down to our docks at North Cove and inspect the boats yourself!  Try to come down when the boats are at the dock and not out sailing.  Good times to visit are during lunch on weekdays and before 12 noon on weekends.
